Massachusetts Legislators split over slots

Local House members are voting to allow the introduction of slot machines at the State’s racetracks this week. When asked about their position about the matter, legislators seem to be clearly divided: nine said they plan to vote in favor of the bill, six showed an intention to vote against it, and seven are still undecided.

The objective of this bill is to allow the placement of 2,000 slot machines at each of the racetracks – Wonderland, Suffolk Downs, Raynham Park and Plainville Racecourse. While State Representative Kathi-Anne Reinstein claimed that they have a majority to pass the bill and even override veto, House Speaker Salvatore F. DiMasi predicted its imminent failure in the House.

Reinstein’s response to DiMasi’s opposition is based on the belief that the bill would mean an important economical boost for the State, as well as an increase in the employment rate. The cities where the slot machines are planned to be located would receive 25% shares, plus a portion of the revenue to be assigned to local aid, as established by the bill itself.

Despite these promising facts, some other legislators believe that many people would have to lose for latter earnings, as is the case of local shop owners, unable to compete with casinos’ low prices. The final word on this legal issue won’t take long, and it is sure to be controversial and complex, not only for legislators, but also for MA citizens.
